“This is a very important initiative that can lead children to play a sport. Some of them may not know some of the sports that are here represented and this could be a way for the young ones to discover their passion, and who knows, join a club, as the first contact with has a great effect”, he said.
Then, the Portuguese athlete proceeded to show some volleyball moves and to sign autographs.

For Leonel Salgueiro, National Gira-Volei Coordinator, “the balance of volleyball’s participation so far is very positive, both for the Portuguese Volleyball Federation and the kids, as they have a great opportunity to get to know the sport. Tiago’s presence here is very important as he’s a reference in our sport and a living proof that a high competition athlete can conciliate with the academic life, which is one of the may focus of the Olympic Week. It’s very important for the kids to have this kind of example” It’s through this type of initiatives and, in volleyball’s case, through Gira-Volei, that some young prospects can emerge. We should have more events like this”, he added.

“It’s great to be here at Guimarães - European City of Sports 2013, which has been considered the best European City of Sports among all others”, concluded.

The Olympic Week is being organized by the Olympic Athlete Commission (CAO) together with Guimarães 2013 – European City of Sports, with the collaboration of the Olympic Committee of Portugal (COP) and the Youth&Sports Portuguese Institute (IPDJ)..
